Here is a listing and description of some of the special Lancaster County events taking place in January of 2009.

The dates, times, and admission prices are accurate as of the time of this posting. However, it is possible that changes may occur as the year progresses.

Elizabethtown

Luidmil Angelov, piano - Come and enjoy Ludmil Angelov of Bulgaria perform some of the most beautiful masterpieces of Chopin.

Ephrata

Live Music in the Cafe - Shane Frees. Using 12-string guitar, flutes and vocals, Shane creates soulful original compositions influenced by nature, chant and tribal rhythms and melds them with Post-Rock characteristics.

A guitarist from the age of 16, Shane's songs are composed with passion and a unique creativity paying tribute to artists such as Leo Kottke, Nirvana and Dead Can Dance..

3rd Friday's A Charm - On every third Friday of the month, the shops of downtown Ephrata invite you to a special celebration. The monthly event serves as the perfect introduction to this Lancaster County city as well as something to look forward to for regular visitors.

Enjoy great deals on shopping, exciting entertainment, delicious local food and so much more. New events will be held each night.

January Warehouse Sale - Enjoy great discounts on overstocked, slightly damaged and one-of-a-kind merchandise at this twice-yearly shopping extravaganza.

On Friday, January 23rd, there will also be a live performance by Pittsburgh-based singer, songwriter, and performer Brad Yoder who has been voted "Best Acoustic /Solo Artist" by the readers of the Pittsburgh City Paper four out of the past five years. The show will be held from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM in The Cafe at Ten Thousand Villages.

Lancaster City

Raucous! Everything Raven - Raucous! Everything Raven combines whimsical art, three dimensional installations, and wall paintings created by Alaskan artist Evon Zerbetz. Zerbetz uses traditional hand carving and tinting techniques to create original prints.

Challenge a friend to Raven Games, relax with a book in the Reading Roost, search for raven “bling” in a scavenger hunt, and tune into the Raven Radio to hear real raven calls and vocalizations.

First Friday - It is always a great time to visit Lancaster City on the first Friday of each month. Experience the downtown as 0ver 60 galleries, museums, shops, and restaurants extend their hours.

The Ice Park - Skate under the stars in Lancaster's only outdoor ice skating rink. The special cooling system will make it possible to skate on the 135' x 80' ice rink in temperatures up to 60 degrees.

Jay & The Americans, The Shangri-Las, Kenny Vance & The Planotones -Premier rock & roll revival band, Jay and the Americans burst on the scene in the early ‘60s with their clean-cut looks, melodic harmony and wide appeal, and are still creating excitement wherever they appear today. One of their biggest hits is "Come a Little Bit Closer.”

Kenny Vance, founding member of Jay and The Americans, now heads up the smooth sounds of doo-wop masters The Planotones. “Looking for an Echo,” their signature song is also a major motion picture about an oldies group trying to make a comeback.

Stravinsky’s Firebird and Lancaster Symphony Orchestra - The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra presents Stravinsky's Firebird; an upbeat, soaring flight of fantasy that combines the romance of Tchaikovsky and the spice of Rimsky-Korsakov. Piano Concerto No. 2, Chopin's delicate, yearning work laden with lilting melodies is a playground for virtuosic fanfare for pianist Michael Sheppard.

Chubby Checker with Otis Day & The Knights - Ernest Evans, better as Chubby Checker, pioneered the dance song craze with hits like "The Twist," “The Fly,” “The Pony,” “The Limbo Rock,” and “Let’s Twist Again.”

When DeWayne Jessie took the role of Otis Day, lead singer of the fictional Otis Day and the Knights, in the movie Animal House, he not only played Otis —he became Otis. Since then, the fictitious group took to the road, touring and performing party hits like “Louie, Louie,” “Shamalama Ding Dong,” and, of course, their infamous toga party rendition of “Shout.”

Elvis Birthday Bash - American Music Theatre favorites Scot Bruce and Mike Albert perform as the young and old Elvis, respectively, to consistently sold out audiences, and are widely considered the premier Elvis impersonators of our time.

Scot Bruce’s Elvis act is revered all over the world in places such as Japan, Brazil and China. Likewise, Mike Albert has been featured on Oprah Winfrey and Inside Edition, and often appears with Elvis’ original group, the Jordanaires.
