Just a short drive from Lancaster County are several wineries that are certainly worth a visit.


Berks County

Calvaresi Winery

Directions:
Take Route 183 North from Reading. Then, turn right at the elementary school. The winery will be 1/2 mile on the right.


This family-owned Pennsylvania winery began in the basement of a city row home in Reading, PA in 1981. That very same year they produced 600 gallons of wine.

Within 3 years, the winery had grown to 3,000 gallons of wine produced. To accommodate the increased production needs, the family purchased six acres in Bernville, PA in Berks County.

The new winery was completed in August of 1988, and has a current production of 11,000 gallons annually, produced by pressing 30 tons of grapes and 10 tons of fruit varieties.

The winery offers free wine tours and wine-tastings.


Chester County


Chaddsford Winery

Directions:
From Philadelphia: Take I-95 South to Route 322 West for 7 miles. Then, turn left onto US 1.
From Delaware: Take Route 52 North to US 1. Then, turn right for about 2 miles.

Located in scenic Chester County, visitors of this Pennsylvania winery can tour the wine-making and barrel-aging cellars and learn how the wine is made. You can also enjoy a picnic on the outdoor deck and grounds.

Throughout the year, Chaddsford Winery offers special wine tasting classes as well as special dinners where you can learn how to appreciate fine wine as well as make friends at the same time.

Moreover, during the summer months, the winery holds special events such as outdoor summer festivals and concerts. The season starts with the Brandywine River Blues Festival on Memorial Day and ends with the Labor Day Weekend Jazz Festival.

On Friday nights, you can enjoy the popular “Summer Nights Under the Stars” outdoor concerts featuring lively music from Jazz and Swing to Big Band and Oldies.


Folly Hill Vineyards

Located in Southern Chester County, Folly Hill Vineyards is situated on a restored 200-year-old historical residence among four acres of beautiful land.

The small yet prolific vineyard produces 20 tons of grapes that yield around 1,000 cases of wine each year. Folly Hill Vineyards offer daily wine-tastings for those over 21 years of age. The cost is $7.00 per person.

Private wine tastings can be arranged by appointment for parties ranging from 10 to 20 guests.


York County

From Harrisburg: Travel South on Rt. 83 to PA Exit 4, Shrewsbury. Turn left on Rt. 851 to Stewartstown Pa. Then, turn left on Rt. 24 North. Travel about 2 miles North of Stewartstown, Pennsylvania on Rt. 24 to Vineyard Road on your left.
From Baltimore: Travel North on Rt. 83 to PA. Exit 4, Shrewsbury. Turn right on Rt. 851 to Stewartstown Pa. Then, turn left on Rt. 24 North. Travel about 2 miles North of Stewartstown, Pennsylvania on Rt. 24 to Vineyard Road on your left.


Nestled among the green valleys of southern York County in Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, Naylor Wine Cellars' wines are grown, fermented, aged and bottled according to traditions dating as far back as the 1800's.

During your visit you can take a leisurely stroll along the 80 acres of the vineyards where clusters of Old Eastern Labrusca, French-American and Classic European Vinifera grapes hang in colorful profusion.

The soil which feeds these grapes, and from which they derive their intense flavor, is unique to the region, part of a special microclimate found nowhere else in the nation.

This Pennsylvania winery provides a friendly atmosphere where you are encouraged to chat with the wine makers who seem enthusiastic about answering all your questions.

Of course, you will also enjoy the informal wine tastings.

You can stop in to get a tour of this Pennsylvania winery anytime. You don't need to call in advance and there is no fee to pay. However, if you would like to tour the Vineyard, you do need to provide advance notice by calling 1-800-292-3370 to set up an appointment.

You can also arrange to have a wedding, anniversary, reunion, fundraiser, company picnic or any other kind of celebration held on the premises.
